Welcome to Youth Apprenticeship at Lincoln High School! Youth Apprenticeship (YA) students spend part of their school day gaining real-world, hands-on experience in a career field that interests them. The goal of the YA program is to give juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore careers, develop employability skills, and refine their career goals.

Honors Cords
Students who successfully complete a 1 or 2-year Youth Apprenticeship program receive a purple and silver honor cord. This cord recognized your hard work and achievement in career and technical education. Wear it with pride on graduation day!
My goal is for every student to have a successful YA experience. If you have a problem, I need to know about it so I can help. Please contact me if you have questions, need help with a work situation, or are struggling in school. I am here to support you in both work and school.
I care about your work-life balance, success at school, mental health, and overall happiness. I understand that life happens and sometimes you need flexibility. Please talk to me before a small problem becomes a big one!
Talking Points
Our district uses a program called Talking Points to send text alerts. I use it to send important reminders to students and parents. You can also use Talking Points to text me if you have a question or need help.
As part of the Youth Apprenticeship contract, students and parents/guardians agree to follow the policies outlined in the CESA 6 Youth Apprenticeship Student Handbook. Some of these policies are reviewed below. The full list of YA program policies can be found at: https://yawisconsin.org/student-resources/
Attendance
Consistent attendance is extremely important in a career and a requirement of the youth apprenticeship program. YA students are expected to maintain good attendance at both school and work. Excessive unexcused absences may result in a review of your YA eligibility, suspension of YA work release, or removal from the YA program and YA employment.
Requesting Time Off
Students must follow their employer’s process for requesting time off, calling in sick, changing shifts, etc. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate scheduling needs with their employer and to give as much notice as possible for absences. (Parents/guardians should NOT contact employers, that is the student’s responsibility). Students may work on days when there is no school, including inclement weather days, as long as it is safe for the student to travel to work.
Failing Grades
Students must be on track for graduation in order to participate in the Youth Apprenticeship program. If you are not passing your classes, you may lose your YA release time and not be allowed to work until grades improve. Failing grades will result in a review of your eligibility to continue in the YA program and may result in removal from the YA program and YA employment.
Related Instruction Course
Students must take classes that relate to their Youth Apprenticeship experience. For each year of YA, students must complete 1 credit of high school related instruction OR 3 college credits.
Work Hour Requirement
YA students should work an average of 12-14 hours per week at a minimum. Wisconsin requires YA students to work a minimum of 450 hours for each year of YA. If needed, up to 200 summer hours can be used towards this requirement.
Forgery
Forgery means creating or using a false document, signature, or other information with the intent to deceive someone. For example, signing another person’s name on a document is forgery. Falsifying information on any YA document will result in a review of your eligibility to continue in the YA program. This may result in removal from the YA program, loss of YA employment, and receiving an “F” for YA on your transcript.
Suspension or Expulsion
Youth Apprenticeship is a school program and YA participation is a privilege. A school suspension also means a suspension from YA work release. If you receive a suspension or other serious disciplinary action at school, your YA employer will be notified. You may not work until the situation has been resolved. Serious behavior issues, drug or alcohol use, or other disciplinary issues may result in removal from the YA program and loss of YA employment. You may also receive an “F” for YA on your transcript or face other consequences.
Termination from Employment
If a student is terminated by their employer during the program, this will result in removal from the YA program. You may also receive an “F” for YA on your transcript. Students will NOT be granted an opportunity to continue with the YA program with a different employer if terminated.
